For the many PhD students who tend to drift toward social isolation as academic requirements grow, peer support groups can be invaluable, says National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow Michael Kiparsky in the post, “Peer Support for PhD Students” on the Tomorrow’s Professor Mailing List website.
Is it okay to date a student once the semester is over? November 17, 5: I am a grad student in my late 20s. I’m teaching a course and I find one of my students a junior ridiculously attractive. I’ve been careful to maintain a professional relationship and not show any favoritism if anything, I probably grade this student slightly harder than my others. There is no chance that I’ll teach this student in the future.
Replies from people in academia would be great, because while I don’t personally have any ethical problem with this I am curious as to what my fellow grad students or professors in my department would think of me if they were to find out–and if that would affect my professional standing in any way.

For example, suppose the student has previously taken a class from the professor but has no plans for further academic contact.
This past semester, I had a professor lets call him Mark who has been a great mentor and resource while I was completing my thesis. His class was quite difficult, but he was always willing to offer assistance to those who needed it. I did well in his class, although he graded me pretty harshly in the beginning. I was going through a fairly stressful time then found out my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and it definitely reflected in my assignments.
He told me that he knew I had more potential than this and asked if there was anything else going on. I confided in him and he offered some words of comfort, but told me that if I needed extensions on any assignments, to tell him beforehand. I accepted the low grades but worked my ass off for the rest of the semester, which showed in my final grades.
Now, I will preface this next part by saying that Mark is incredibly attractive. Girls in the class, who normally would wear jeans and a tshirt to school, will come dressed to impress. Mark is a very good teacher, engaged and incredibly knowledgeable, but he refuses to join in on any social events, pub nights, etc.
Professor dating grad students
There are lots of ways to guesstimate ages, and geologists knew the earth was old a long time ago and I might add that they were mostly Christian creationist geologists. But they didn’t know how old. Radiometric dating actually allows the measurement of absolute ages, and so it is deadly to the argument that the earth cannot be more than 10, years old. Radiometric methods measure the time elapsed since the particular radiometric clock was reset.
Radiocarbon dating, which is probably best known in the general public, works only on things that were once alive and are now dead. It measures the time elapsed since death, but is limited in scale to no more than about 50, years ago.
Nonetheless, much of the power is invested in the professor’s role(s). This power can be misused, so most (U.S.) institutions have guidelines against dating and sexual relationships between faculty and students. Accordingly, the professor’s disregard for professional guidelines would be another, ancillary ethical concern. (Re: Graduate students.
It is an excellent question, especially at the start of the conference and job season. O, you graduate students! What am I going to do with you? How am I going to explain to you all of the ways that you sabotage and undermine yourselves, with the best of intentions, and with complete lack of self-awareness?
So I will do what I can. I will list the ways that grad students act like grad students.

Leon Harris is a writer for PUA where you can find great tips and advice about the art of seducing your partner. If you pay any attention to current events, you probably know that student-teacher romantic relationships are a bad idea. They almost always end in heartache and sometimes imprisonment. At the very least, such a relationship will likely inspire jealousy and even disgust in your peers, a social situation you may not be too keen to deal with.
However, there are times when two people are fated to be together, and you should never turn down a chance at love just because other people may not understand. So if you find that you are attracted to your professor, and the feeling is mutual, you may want to follow a few guidelines when you choose to start dating. Most college campuses have rules about fraternization between students and teachers and the gist of it is that such relationships are verboten.
Wait until class is over. If you get good marks, people could question whether you were graded on merit or…other criteria in essence, others might be tempted to speculate that your grade was based on preferential treatment because of your relationship. In short, dating a teacher while taking their course is a big no-no. Start on equal footing. When you enter into a relationship with someone who you would normally see as an authority figure, the dynamic can easily carry over into your private life.
This person is going to be your partner, not your superior.

Hey baby, wanna clap erasers together later? Even if it was not illegal, the scandal that would erupt from this socially unacceptable affair would be so devastating it would basically cost a teacher or professor his or her job forever.
