First, I have displayed for you 3 specific areas in the electrical system that work together to start your truck when you turn the ignition with a key. Please hang with me during the read, I am far from an electrician and it is not one of my favorite or knowledgeable areas with vehicles. The information I am posting here was all brought on by an issue I had with my own truck which had starting issues for years. The problem was a weak spark and I chased the problem with money for a long time. I have visited many forums, mechanics, read documents and manuals to fix the problem, but could not figure out where the problem was and why it only acted up at certain times.

How can I add a relay for my GM vehicle? I test fitted the starter and noticed that the pinion does not retract when it is released on the engine stand. It is normal for a gear reduction starter to hang in the ring gear when the engine is cranked, and yet does not start. Direct drive starters do not do this because they can rotate the small amount necessary to retract the pinion. Gear reduction starters do not retract in this situation because of the resistance of the gears.
The tiny amount of rotation necessary to retract the pinion is amplified because of the gear ratio inside the starter, requiring four to five times the pressure to rotate the gear.
Just hook one clip to your battery’s positive terminal and the other to the terminal on the starter relay, and then press the 12v push button switch. Start your car from under the hood the easy way with a remote starter switch from AutoZone.
Read the box or contact the remote starter manufacturer to determine if it is compatible with your vehicle. You will want a starter that is compatible with your anti-theft system and secure. If it is not compatible with your anti-theft system, you will have to buy additional costly anti-theft bypass modules. Installation instructions vary according to different brands and models of remote starters. It is important to carefully read the installation instructions and find the wiring diagrams for your particular starter.
If you choose a used unit or one that does not include directions, check out online instructions before making a purchase.

So far I have the main harness hooked up with all connections tested with a multimeter. On the primary 9 pin harness, I have the black wire hooked to a solid ground and the white wire hooked to the running light switch. The rest are left unhooked. The brown wire is hooked to the brake switch, for now the rest are left unhooked. Door lock harness is left unhooked for now, satellite harness is hooked up to the module as well as the valet switch.
Now I have a couple of questions regarding this unit, I tried to see if I could get the module to show any signs of life by trying to program some of the commands to it, but could not get the led to light at all. My first question is do I need the neurtal safety switch and hood pin switch hooked up to test my progress so far with the install?
My second question is, are there any other wires that need to be hooked up to their appropriate on the primary 9 pin harness to test the remote start feature? I read through some forums that it can be used for add on modules but im not so sure. My third question is, does the satellite harness need to be hooked up for the remote start feature? Does that have anything to do with the phone app or is it the antennas for the remotes? My fourth question is regarding how to set up the door lock feature when the time comes.
Ive read that this truck has reverse polarity style door locks, Im completely unsure of how to hook up the module so it works with that style door lock.

This applies to Explorers, the and up is NOT the same! I am no longer selling IKTs. I also get daily emails asking about the ignorance of dealers not knowing they can do this and asking me to contact them or where is a dealer that can do it. Sorry I am not going to do this and I don’t keep a list of dealers that know they can it. There has been so much discussion on the remote start systems for the Explorer I am doing this thread in hopes of answering most questions.

All this information is included in the installation manual that comes with the remote starter but a description of the wire colors and how someone else completed a project is always helpful. Whether you solder your connections or not the best and most simple way to splice wires together during this install is to strip away the insulation of the wire in the car so that there is insulation on the two sides of the wire, but in between you have an area where the insulation has been stripped away.
In that area where you have stripped away the insulation use a knife or a screwdriver to make a loop or a hole through which you feed the wire from the remote starter through and twist around the loop made in the first wire. If you plan on soldering your connections apply solder to the wires after they are joined in this manner and then tape them up with electrical tape. Remove panels around steering column Follow the guide on wjjeeps.
Locate the ignition switch harness Locate the ignition switch harness on the left side of the steering column closer to the door , it will be a large white clip with thick gauge wires going into it, pull the harness out of its socket by pushing on the small tab and pulling backward towards the front of the car. Beware of a small black wiring harness that is taped to the ignition switch harness, it is not used in this installation but it should be unhooked from the steering column as well to allow you to twist and contort the ignition switch harness without hurting other wires.
Remove the remote starter from the box and prepare the wires for installation One quick suggestion that would have helped tremendously with my installation, twist up your wires and have them nice and orderly for the installation, I ended up having to use a dozen or so zip ties to tidy up my wiring and make it presentable when I was done but definitely twist them up beforehand if you can. A great example on how to do so is seen here: You Tube Step 4: Begin installing the remote starter Now that your wires are in order and your dashboard is taken apart, start to wire up the remote starter to the car.
Start with the 9-pin harness and connect the wires according to this table: I used a factory bolt underneath the dashboard, other people will recommend drilling a hole in the body of the car or using a factory bolt elsewhere in the car. Where you put the ground wire is unimportant as long as it is good grounding location use a multimeter to test if it is a good ground or not.
